SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT STRATEGY
CLOSE THE LOOP - Circular economy at OPED
The material economy of our products is particularly important to us.
Our approach is to avoid waste! Because everything we produce consumes raw materials.
That's why we have been taking back orthoses worn by patients in Germany since 1995 and reintroducing the components into our material cycle. In 2023, 180 tons of material could be saved as a result.
The components are recycled in accordance with the highest hygiene requirements and are then returned to production. This not only saves resources, but also minimizes greenhouse gas emissions.
INCLUSION in the manufacture of our ORTHESES
Since 2012, a fully integrated working group from Oberlandwerkstätten Miesbach has been responsible for a large part of the recycling process. This cooperation is a successful example of employing people with disabilities close to the primary labor market.
MODERN BUILDING TECHNOLOGY
Modern building technology was already taken into account when planning the buildings of the medical park in Valley (KfW efficiency houses NWG EH 55 and NWG EH 70).
For example, biomass heating, photovoltaic systems and charging stations for electric vehicles were installed. Where we can retrofit, we do. For example, with energy-saving LED lighting, heat recovery in the manufacture of our products or the expansion of our photovoltaic system.
GREEN ELECTRICITY made by OPED in Valley
We generate around 190 MWh of electricity with photovoltaic systems on the roofs of the medical park. We use this for our own needs and feed it into the electricity grid. Thanks to our energy management, our own annual consumption of PV electricity is around 88%.
This saves us around 137 tons of CO2 per year.

In order to generate even more electricity in the future, we are continuously expanding our photovoltaic systems.
A total of 19 charging points are available for our vehicle fleet at the Oberlaindern site, which can also be powered by our photovoltaic system.
If our own PV power is not sufficient, we can fall back on 100% green electricity from the grid.
SUSTAINABLE HEATING via BIOMASS HEATING
Our two buildings are heated with a biomass heating system that runs on renewable fuel from local forests.
This saves us around 400 tons of CO2 per year. The system with an output of 550 kW also supplies parts of our neighboring company's buildings.
Through sustainable forest management, local forests are maintained and work is created for foresters in our region.
